Claim: posting on social media gets you into Google's AI Overviews

By Dr. Mehrdad Mehrbod, Co-Founder and Chief Product Officer. Reviewed by Dr. Maziar Gomrokchi, Co-Founder and CEO. Last updated October 22, 2026.

Key point. Not supported for posts on X. In our measurements of Google AI Overviews, YouTube is one of the few social platforms that regularly shows up as a source; posts on X almost never do.

Verdict: not supported as a general claim. Which platform you post on matters. Video on YouTube is cited as a source on many searches; posts on X were not cited on any of the searches we counted.

What did we measure?

We counted, for each Google search that showed an AI Overview, which social platforms appeared among the cited sources on any capture.

328 of 576
Google searches with an AI Overview where YouTube was cited (57%); posts on X were cited on none of the same 576. Counts searches where a platform was cited, not what the engine read
Elementera, Google AI Overviews, US searches, July 2026

In one sentence: "YouTube is one of the few social platforms that regularly shows up as a source; posts on X almost never do"

The count behind it: "Across 576 Google searches that showed an AI Overview, YouTube was cited in 57% of them (328 searches). Posts on X were cited in none of the same 576."

Read those numbers with care. They count searches where a platform was cited, not what the engine retrieved or read. LinkedIn and Facebook do appear as sources. And a platform that is rarely cited can still shape what people believe; this count says nothing about influence without a citation.

Method

The table gives the engine, the sample and the dates behind the numbers above.

The numbers have a methodology card. The qualitative finding also appears in the AI search visibility funnel.

Where does the claim come from, and what do the docs say now?

The claim grew out of Google's deals and reports on social and forum content. None of them says that social posts are cited in AI Overviews.

The common claim"Post on social media and you will show up in AI Overviews."repeated widelyOctober 22, 2026

What the common claim gets wrong. Being findable in Google Search is not the same as being cited in an AI Overview, and the platforms differ: in our counts YouTube is cited often and posts on X almost never.

How far does the result reach?

The result covers Google AI Overviews only. Other engines read social platforms differently, and nothing here describes ChatGPT, Perplexity or Copilot.

It does not mean social media is pointless for AI visibility. Posts can reach people who then search, link and write about you, and that is outside what a citation count can see.

What should you do instead?

Put the content you want cited where AI Overviews already cite it, and keep social posts for reach.

  1. If a buyer question is best answered by a demonstration, make a short YouTube video that answers it plainly.
  2. Give the video a title and description in your buyers' words, and link it from the matching page on your site.
  3. Publish your substantive answers on your own site first, then share them on social platforms.
  4. Check which platforms the AI Overviews for your buyers' questions actually cite, on more than one day.
