Claim: if you rank first on Google, the AI Overview will cite you

By Soroush Mehri, Co-Founder and Chief AI Officer. Reviewed by Dr. Maziar Gomrokchi, Co-Founder and CEO. Last updated October 22, 2026.

Key point. Not supported. In our measurements of US non-branded searches, the first organic result was cited by the AI Overview more often than results in positions 6 to 10, but far from every time. Most cited sites came from outside the top 10 altogether.

Verdict: not supported as stated. A top ranking goes with a higher citation rate in our data. It does not guarantee a citation, and the AI Overview often cites sites that do not rank in the top 10 at all.

What did we measure?

We compared, for each search, the websites Google's AI Overview cited with the websites in that same search's organic top 10. The searches were non-branded business searches in the US, captured in July 2026.

Elementera, Google AI Overviews, US non-branded business searches, July 2026

"The website in the first organic position was cited by the AI Overview 56% of the time (95% interval 51% to 61%). Websites in positions 6 to 10 were cited 34% of the time (31% to 37%)."

The top 10 is also not where most citations come from: "In our study of 150 non-branded Google searches (US, July 2026), about 57% of the websites cited in AI Overviews did not appear in that same search's top 10 organic results (95% interval 54% to 60%)."

Our larger measurement says the same. "Google showed an AI Overview on 573 of 650 non-branded business searches we tracked. On 91% of the searches we added in July (95% interval 88% to 93%), at least one cited website was missing from the organic top 10."

Where does the claim come from, and what do the docs say now?

The claim treats an AI Overview as a summary of the top results. Google's own description of how the feature picks its links says otherwise.

The common claim"Rank first on Google and the AI Overview will cite you."repeated widelyOctober 22, 2026

What the common claim gets wrong. Google says the links come from several related searches, not only from the results for the query you typed, which is why a top ranking raises the chance of a citation without guaranteeing one.

How far does the result reach?

The result covers Google AI Overviews on US non-branded business searches. It says nothing about ChatGPT, Perplexity or other engines, and nothing about searches for your company's own name.

It also does not say what moving from position 8 to position 1 would do for you. Sites that rank first may differ from sites in positions 6 to 10 in many ways, so the gap is a description, not a forecast. Read the position figures as: good rankings help you get read, and they are not the whole story.

What should you do instead?

Keep doing SEO, and stop treating a top ranking as proof you are in the AI answer. Check the answer itself.

  1. List ten non-branded questions your buyers ask.
  2. For each, note your organic position and whether the AI Overview cites you.
  3. Repeat the check on another day before you draw a conclusion.
  4. Where you rank well but are not cited, read the sources that are cited and compare what they say with your page.
